If you’re heading from Marrakech to Merzouga (the gateway to the Sahara Desert) or the iconic Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll pass right through Ouarzazate on your way there.
A bit of background about Ouarzazate: It was a major stop on the ancient trans-Saharan trade route and is located on the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs (the most famous of which is the aforementioned Ait Ben Haddou), which means that this city is steeped in thousands of years of history.
Not only is it an interesting place to explore. It’s also a logical stop for some refreshments and to do a bit of sightseeing after driving four hours from Marrakech.
Beyond the city’s historical significance, Ouarzazate has a unique claim to fame. It’s a popular filming location for some of the biggest movies and TV shows around, including Gladiator I and II and Game of Thrones.
When I was driving from Marrakech to Merzouga, I actually stopped in Ouarzazate twice. First, on my drive from Marrakech to Dades Valley, then again on the way back from Todra Gorge to Ait Ben Haddou. Both times were much-needed breaks to stretch the old legs after hours of driving! But honestly, it worked out perfectly since I could split up the sightseeing instead of cramming it all into one day.
So, to help you make the most of your stop in this modern Moroccan city, I’ve rounded up the top things to do in Ouarzazate – including the best Ouarzazate hotels and restaurants.

Top Things to Do in Ouarzazate
Wander Around Kasbah Taourirt
As I mentioned earlier, Ouarzazate lies on the ancient trans-Saharan trade route. This prime location made it an incredibly wealthy region. This led to the construction of many large and lavish kasbahs – Kasbah Taourirt being one of them.
Kasbah Taourirt’s roots date back to the 17th century. Its most famous owners were the powerful Glaoui family, who took over in the early 20th century.
The Kasbah is located right in the commercial centre of Ouarzazate and is open daily from 8am to 5pm. It costs 50dh (£4) to visit without a guide or 150dh (£12) with one. We opted for a guide since the kasbah has over 300 rooms and a maze of winding passageways, so it would be easy to get lost!
The tour lasted an hour, and while it was a bit touristy, I found it really informative and interesting. That being said, after one guided kasbah tour, you probably don’t need another. They tend to follow the same storyline: a rich male ruler, their multiple wives, concubines, and slaves.
Across from Kasbah Taourirt is the Cinema Museum. This has been shut since June 2024 due to a fire breaking out and destroying many of the artefacts.
Visit The Old Synagogue
Sitting right next to Kasbah Taourirt, the Old Synagogue is a hidden gem that dates back to the 16th century. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the building, the local area, and Morocco’s rich Jewish heritage.
You’ll also find Jewish artefacts and learn about the traditions and cultures of the region. Exploring the synagogue with the in-house guide takes only about 30 minutes. While it is free to visit, there is an expectation to leave a tip at the end. It’s open daily from 8am to 7:30pm.
Discover Kasbah Amridil
🏰 Top Tip: If you’re going from Ouarzazate to Marrakech, then visit Kasbah of Tifoultoute. If you’re continuing on from Ouarzazate to Merzouga, then visit Kasbah Amridil.
Kasbah Ambridil is located just outside Skrouda, about a 45-minute drive from Ouarzazate on your way to Dades Valley. The kasbah is a prime example of Moroccan architecture. With 95% of it still the original kasbah that dates back to the late 17th century.
Although when we visited, there were parts of the kasbah that had been damaged by the earthquake, it was still very impressive! We were still able to walk about and get up to the rooftop to enjoy the views of the surrounding landscape.
An entrance ticket cost us 40dh (£3), or you can opt for a guide to take you around, which costs 150dh (£12). Since we’d already been on a guided tour of Kasbah Taourirt, we decided just to pay the entrance fee for this one.

Exploring the Famous Film Studios in Ouarzazate
You might be wondering why Ouarzazate has become such a hotspot for filmmakers. It boils down to the region’s climate, stunning landscapes, and low production costs.
It’s clear that the locals take pride in their film heritage. And rightfully so, as many have worked as extras in some of Hollywood’s biggest productions.
I’d say you don’t need to visit both film studios mentioned below, unless you’re particularly interested or have time to spare. I chose to visit Atlas Studios since it’s better known, though CLA Studios actually has a slightly higher rating on Google. It’s up to you!
CLA Studios
CLA Studios will give you a fascinating insight into iconic film sets, costumes, and props from films like The Mummy and The Jewel of the Nile.
It has three main sets to explore: the Jerusalem set (featured in Prince of Persia and Game of Thrones), the Kasbah set, and the Ben Hur Boat set (used in the filming of Ben Hur). CLA Studios is open every day from 9am to 7pm.
Atlas Studios
Located just outside Ouarzazate, Atlas Studios is one of the largest film studios in the world. Although it does get mixed reviews online, I actually found it quite interesting. Granted, the sets are a little run-down, which does take away some of the movie magic, but it’s still a cool experience.
For 80dh (£6), you go on a one-hour guided tour around Atlas Studios and explore famous sets from Gladiator and Prince of Persia to Game of Thrones. If you’re keen to see more, you can get a combined ticket for 110dh (£9), which includes access to the Kingdom of Heaven set, located about 1km away. This second set actually gets much better reviews than the main studio, so it’s definitely worth it! Atlas Studios is open daily from 8am-6.30pm.
Best Day Trips from Ouarzazate
Explore Fint Oasis
Fint Oasis might be an hour outside Ouarzazate, but it’s worth the journey if you can get there. It’s made up of four tiny villages, where life has barely changed over the years. So, don’t be surprised if you see locals by the river, casually washing their clothes – it’s all part of the charm! But what really draws people here is the promise of a lush, green paradise in the midst of the arid Moroccan landscape – a true oasis that has been beautifully preserved.
I didn’t end up visiting Fint Oasis during my time in Morocco, as the roads weren’t in the best condition and I’d only hired a hatchback. Plus, I definitely didn’t want to risk a fine for damaging the car!
So, if you plan on visiting Fint Oasis, be sure to rent a 4×4 to make the journey smoother. Or, for a more unique way to get there, consider going on this Fint Oasis Private Day Hike. And while you’re there, don’t miss the amazing Terasse de Delices for lunch or even an overnight stay!
Visiting Aït Benhaddou from Ouarzazate
Marvel at the UNESCO Site, Ait Ben Haddou
When you’re in Ouarzazate, one thing you absolutely need to do is visit the nearby Ait Ben Haddou – the most famous kasbah in all of Morocco! Let’s be real; it’s probably the main reason that people make their way to Ouarzazate in the first place!

How to get from Ouarzazate to Ait Ben Haddou
Ouarzazate is located about a 35-minute drive from Ait Ben Haddou. The best option to get there is to take a taxi from a taxi rank called “Place des Grand Taxis”. It’s very official, you buy your token from the booth, then the taxi will collect it before leaving. For a shared taxi, you can expect to pay roughly 15/20dhs (£3/4) for both ways.
Ouarzazate Desert Tours
If you’re looking for an activity that will have your adrenaline going, then hop on a private quad bike tour of the Ouarzazate Desert. This will have you navigating your way along the dunes and diverse terrains surrounding Ouarzazate. These breathtaking landscapes really are the perfect place to explore, especially on a quad bike.
Many quad tours also include visits to local Berber villages, allowing you to immerse yourself in the rich culture and traditions while enjoying your exciting adventure.
Quad biking is all the rage in Morocco! Whether you find yourself in the Agafay Desert, the Sahara, or even Marrakech, you’re sure to spot people zipping around on their quad bikes! This also means that if you decide to skip quad biking in Ouarzazate, there will be plenty of opportunities to do it elsewhere in Morocco!
How Many Days Should I Spend in Ouarzazate?
There’s actually quite a lot to see in Ouarzazate, but the town itself and the film studios can be explored in a single day, although it may feel a bit rushed.
If you prefer a more relaxed pace, two days in Ouarzazate will give you enough time to explore the town. For additional adventures, Aït Benhaddou and the Fint Oasis each deserve a whole day to fully appreciate them.

Book a Tour from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Visiting Ouarzazate from Marrakech couldn’t be easier, as there are plenty of tour companies that service this route!
To save you from having to do the research, here are the top group tours for visiting Ouarzazate:
- Day trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech: This highly-rated tour takes you to all the must-visit spots, including a scenic stop in the Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’ n’Tichka Pass, a visit to the famous Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate, and, of course, the iconic Ait Ben Haddou.
- Or if you’ve more time to spare, embark on this 3-Day Merzouga and Sahara Desert Tour. It’s one of the most popular tours from Marrakech. On your way to Merzouga, you’ll explore Ouarzazate, visit the ancient city of Ait Ben Haddou, discover the stunning Atlas Mountains and Todra Gorge, and spend a night under the stars in the Sahara. It’s the perfect way to see all the must-see places in southern Morocco in a nutshell.
Hire a Car in Marrakech and drive to Ouarzazate
This is exactly what I did: I hired a car in Marrakech and drove (for the first time in a foreign country!) to Merzouga, stopping off in Ouarzazate to do some sightseeing along the way. I absolutely loved the freedom that driving gives you to explore the country at your own pace.

Take the Marrakech to Ouarzazate Bus
Getting the bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate is definitely one of the most budget-friendly transport options. While you won’t be able to stop at any viewpoint, you can still admire the stunning scenery from your seat.
There are two bus companies that operate this route:
- Supratours: They run four buses per day from Marrakech to Ouarzazate between 8am to 3.30pm | Costs about £8/€9 one-way | Takes about 4-5 hours
- CTM: They run five buses per day from Marrakech to Ouarzazate between 12.30am and 4.15pm | Costs about £7/€8 one-way | Takes about 4-5 hours
🚌 Top Tip: If you plan to do a day trip using public transport, aim to catch an early morning bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, and then return on an evening bus to make the most of your trip.
Private Transfer or Tour to Ouarzazate
If you don’t want to drive, take public transport, or join a group tour, your best bet is to take a private transfer from Marrakech to Ouarzazate or a private tour that includes visiting Ait Ben Haddou.
Either way, you can sit back, relax, and stretch out in a comfortable taxi for the long journey ahead. No need to focus on the road, squeeze into a cramped bus, or make small talk with anyone if you don’t feel like it. Plus, you can ask your driver to stop off wherever and whenever you would like!
Where to Stay in Ouarzazate: Hotels, Riads, and Guesthouses
Budget Ouarzazate Hotels (£0-50 per night)
- Hôtel Riad Dar Daïf: This Ouarzazate hotel gets rave reviews! With beautiful decor, a swimming pool, and stunning views over the Atlas Mountains, it’s a budget-friendly gem. Although it is about a 20-minute drive from Ouarzazate, so you’ll need to take a taxi or drive out to it.
- Riad Dar Rita: Located 15-25 minutes walk from the commercial centre of Ouarzazate, this riad has everything you need for a comfortable overnight stay – cosy rooms, private bathrooms, and a free continental breakfast.
Mid-Range Ouarzazate Hotels (£50-100 per night)
- Le Petit Riad Maison d’hôtes: At this hotel, you can opt for your breakfast to be delivered to your room. And it doesn’t stop there, with a gorgeous outdoor pool and a cosy fireplace for chilly evenings, this stunning riad is the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.
- Dar Amoudou: Just an 8-minute drive from the centre of Ouarzazate, this gorgeous accommodation offers views for days. Once you’re settled in for the evening, you won’t need to go anywhere, with an on-site restaurant for dinner and a cosy coffee shop for slow mornings.
Luxury Ouarzazate Hotels (£100 or more per night)
- Riad Chay & Boutique: Nestled in a small village just outside Ouarzazate, this beautiful accommodation is the perfect escape from the chaos of the city. With a rooftop to soak in the stunning views, this place is all about slowing down and being present.
- Berbère Palace: If luxury is what you’re after, this is it. Everything about this accommodation is spot-on, from the location to the beautifully designed rooms. It even has its own spa with a Hammam, sauna, and hot tub – a perfect way to start or end your day.
Must-Try Ouarzazate Restaurants
When I visited Ouarzazate, we randomly picked a restaurant we walked past. Sometimes, this is the best way to stumble upon some incredible places to eat – but not this time! The portions were huge, but the food was terrible. I guess that’s the risk you take with spontaneous dining – you win some, you lose some!
Don’t make the same mistake we did – instead, the Ouarzazate restaurants listed below come with excellent reviews citing incredible food, service, and prices.

I visited Ouarzazate in July, and let me tell you – it was ridiculously hot. After our Atlas Studios tour, we got back to the car, and it was registering a whopping 47°C (117°F). That kind of heat makes you feel permanently dehydrated, and I spent the whole trip looking like a sunburnt lobster (definitely not the aesthetic I was going for!).
Honestly? I really wouldn’t recommend visiting Morocco in the summer. The sky is hazy from the heat, the rivers are completely dried up, and sightseeing can sometimes feel a bit like a survival challenge.
That being said, I didn’t find Morocco as crowded as people claim during the summer, especially outside Marrakech. So if you’re worried about summer being too busy, don’t stress about that!
Autumn and winter are hands down the best times to visit. The weather is milder, making sightseeing so much more enjoyable. Just keep in mind that evenings get chilly, so pack a jumper or two. If you’re road-tripping, there’s a higher possibility of snow and ice – so you’ll need to drive a bit more carefully.
On the plus side, winter brings crystal-clear skies, meaning you’ll be treated to some stunning sunrises and sunsets, especially outside the big cities!
Is Ouarzazate Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! Ouarzazate has become quite the hotspot, thanks to the wave of tourists heading to the famous Ait Ben Haddou. With that, the city has seen a lot of investment, making it more modern while still keeping its authentic charm.
Visiting the film studios offers a glimpse into a different side of Morocco that you might’ve otherwise missed if you were to skip Ouarzazate.
Plus, the location of Ouarzazate in relation to Marrakech and Merzouga (Sahara Desert) naturally makes it the perfect place to stop off, stretch your legs, and do a bit of sightseeing.
However you decide to fit it in, whether it’s a spot off or an overnight stay, it’s definitely worth including in your itinerary.
