Taxi and Private Transfers from Glasgow Airport to the City Centre

For maximum comfort and convenience, taking a taxi from Glasgow Airport to the city centre is a great choice. Fares usually range from £20–£30 — roughly double the price of the bus — but it’s hard to beat being dropped off right at your hotel door (and having the whole car to yourself!).

During off-peak times, the journey takes around 15–20 minutes, but at rush hour, it can stretch to 45 minutes or more, so plan ahead if you’ve got reservations or evening plans waiting.

You’ll find the airport taxi rank directly outside the terminal, and there’s no need to pre-book. However, if you prefer peace of mind (or a touch of luxury), you can pre-book a private transfer for around £15 per person — ideal if you’re travelling as a group of six or more.

You’re not limited to the taxis waiting at the rank – you can use Uber. Feel free to arrange your own transfer and choose whatever deal works best for you.

And if you’re lucky enough to have a friend in Glasgow, they can pick you up just outside the main terminal. Do note that the express pick-up zone costs £6 for up to 15 minutes, with an additional £1 per minute after that — so tell them not to hang about!

Bus from Glasgow Airport to the City Centre

To get from Glasgow Airport to the city centre, hop on the Glasgow Airport Express Service 500, which departs from Stance 1 just outside the terminal.

The bus makes stops at Bothwell Street, North Hanover Street, and finally Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre — giving you the flexibility to hop off wherever’s most convenient or closest to your hotel.

The journey takes around 15 minutes during off-peak times, but it can double or even triple during rush hour, so try not to cut it too fine.

Tickets cost £11 one way for adults, or £17.50 for an open return if you’re heading back to the airport later. You can pay by card or cash directly on the bus.

The service runs day and night, with frequent departures, so it’s a reliable option no matter what time your flight lands. Just be sure to check the Glasgow Airport Express Service 500 timetable before you travel.

🚌 If you’re going in the opposite direction from the city centre to Glasgow Airport: You can catch the Glasgow Airport Express service 500 from Stance 46 at Buchanan Bus Station.

Train Options from Glasgow Airport to the City Centre

Getting the train from Glasgow airport to the city centre isn’t the most straightforward option.

Technically, you can’t get all the way from Glasgow Airport to the city centre by train, so this option involves a bus-to-train transfer. Honestly, it’s not the most convenient choice, especially when there are simpler, faster ways to travel — but I wanted to include it so you can see all your options.

Here’s how it works: from Glasgow Airport, hop on the 757 McGill’s bus to Paisley Gilmour Street Station, then catch a train to Glasgow Central Station.

The journey takes around 30 minutes (not counting transfer and waiting times) and costs roughly £11. Considering the bus alone takes less time and costs the same, I’d personally stick to the Glasgow Airport Express Service 500, but it’s good to know the train + bus option exists.

Hire a Car from Glasgow Airport

If you hire a car, you can explore epic places in Scotland like Fort William.

Planning to travel around Scotland? Hiring a car might be your best move. Picking one up at the airport gives you the freedom to explore beyond the city, including the stunning shores of Loch Lomond (just a 30–40 minute drive away), or you could set off on an unforgettable road trip like the NE250 or the iconic NC500.

There are several car rental companies to choose from at Glasgow Airport. Some of which are located in the terminal, and others are located outside to the left when leaving the terminal building, about a 5-minute walk away.

🚗 If you want to compare car rental companies, then use DiscoverCars or AutoEurope. Both are very reliable websites that will help you find the best car rental deals by comparing the prices and ratings of hundreds of companies.

Tips for Getting from Glasgow Airport to the City Centre Easily

Once you’ve picked your preferred way to travel, a few simple tips can make the journey even smoother:

  • Buy Tickets in Advance: Many services offer online booking, saving you both time and sometimes money.
  • Payment: These days, most people in Glasgow pay with contactless or card — cash is becoming pretty rare. That’s true for all the transport options from the airport to the city centre, too. Still, it’s wise to have a few notes on hand, just in case your card doesn’t work.
  • Watch the Traffic: Glasgow roads can get busy during rush hour, so allow a little extra time if you’re travelling by bus, taxi, or car.
  • Stay Connected: Use free airport Wi-Fi to check Uber or live bus schedules for delays.
  • Know Your Stop: Whether you’re heading to Buchanan Street or your hotel, double-check the nearest drop-off point to avoid unnecessary walking.
